This two-part solo exhibition of works by Frank Gerritz took place at the Fifth Floor Foundation and at the nearby Stark Gallery (hence the subtitle of the Foundation’s show). For the observant visitor, the linked shows offered the artist’s concrete yet coded self-portrait, in that several works corresponded directly to his measurements—principally his head, shoulders, and height. Most striking in this regard was The Center (1994), a rectangular wall drawing visible upon entering the Fifth Floor Foundation’s space. “Looking at it,” the critic Janet Koplos observed, “you felt that you were sharing the room with a rather elusive companion.” Yet elusiveness was the opposite of what Koplos characterized as “the artist’s compacted, gestural scribbling, the graphite squeezing out light.”
