In a written statement that accompanied his exhibition, Stephen Antonakos, an artist known for his sculptures and neon works, describes the “material space” of drawing. “Basically I see drawings as form and color. I am interested in how colors penetrate and turn into forms and vice versa. There is a sense of movement in space that begins to take place when I get to stroking in color.” For Paul Cummings, who wrote an essay for the show, the combination of form, texture, and color in Antonakos’s drawings brings about “revelations of light. For all their geometric structuring, these remain emotional expressions, highly charged yet balanced by the control displayed in condensed gestures.”
